Cops: Man Falsely Said Girlfriend Allowed Escaped Prisoners Inside

Vermont State Police say Richard Baldwin of Waterbury called police Thursday evening and said his girlfriend, Ellen Hater, allowed the two men inside

An intoxicated Vermont man falsely reported that his girlfriend allowed two convicted murders who escaped from prison in New York to sleep in the basement of their apartment, police say.

Vermont State Police say Richard Baldwin of Waterbury called police Thursday evening and said his girlfriend allowed the two men inside.

Convicted murderers David Sweat and Richard Matt escaped from the Clinton Correctional Facility in northern New York Saturday, prompting a manhunt spanning multiple states.

The two men cut through a steel wall, broke through bricks and crawled through a steam pipe before emerging through a manhole outside the prison.

After Baldwin called police, officials arrived and questioned him and his girlfriend. They say Baldwin was intoxicated and admitted to making false statements.

He was arrested on suspicion of making false reports to law enforcement and was transported to the Barre City Police Department, where police say he stayed overnight due to his "incapacitation from intoxication."
