DC Students Sent School Threat From Muslim Student's Email Account

Two teenagers have been expelled from their high school in D.C. after school officials say they used a Muslim student's email account to send every student a threat.

Two seniors at Washington Latin Public Charter School in Upper Northwest D.C. were expelled this week, months before graduation, school officials and parents said.

The trouble began Wednesday when the students opened an unattended laptop they found in a classroom. They saw the previous user, who is Muslim, had not signed out of his email account.

"Friday there will be a big boom," the students wrote, sending the message to more than 600 current and former students.

School administrators were able to track down which computer sent the message and who sent it.

Head of school Martha Cutts called the expulsion of the two students, whose names were not released, a teachable moment.

"The safety and security of our students and teachers must be my highest priority," she said. "I would obviously take something like that very seriously, and we did."

Parents praised the school for taking quick action.
