Dead Whale Washes Ashore on Coney Island

A dead whale washed ashore on the beach in Coney Island Monday afternoon.

The 18-foot minke whale was discovered on the beach near Ocean parkway and Surf Avenue around 1:30 p.m., officials said.

A section of the beach was shut down for several hours while experts from the State Department of Environmental Conservation Police and the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research examined the whale.

It appeared that the whale was struck by a boat's propeller and died from those injuries before washing ashore, authorities said.

Beachgoers said they were surprised and saddened to see a whale windup dead on the beach in Coney Island.

The whale was removed from the beach Monday night.
