Both Mutombo as well as his charitable foundation posted messages on Facebook announcing he was at the airport during the attacks but was safe and unharmed.

Mutombo, 49, was an 8-time All-Star and 4-time defensive player of the year during his 19 years in the NBA. He played for six NBA teams, including the Sixers squad that went to the 2001 NBA finals. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2015.

Aside from his NBA career, he is also known for his extensive humanitarian work especially in his native Democratic Republic of Congo.

During Tuesday’s bombings, 11 people died at Brussels airport while 20 were killed at a nearby metro station. Belgian fire officials said 212 people have been injured, 30 critically and 96 seriously. Several Americans – including a U.S. service member, his family and three Mormon missionaries – are among the injured.

ISIS has claimed responsibility for Tuesday morning's attacks. Belgian authorities are searching for a suspect in the attacks after a surveillance video was released.
