Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. reached out to voters in Illinois' 2nd Congressional District on Saturday for the first time since being treated for bipolar disorder and depression pleading for their support. Listen to his entire phone call.

The Associated Press has confirmed through the Reverend Jesse Jackson that his son, Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr., will head back to Minnesota's Mayo Clinic for a check up.

The elder Jackson told The Associated Press on Sunday that doctors will determine whether the congressman needs to stay longer. The younger Jackson left the clinic in September after seeking treatment for bipolar disorder. He first took medical leave in June.

The younger Jackson has given no indication of when he'll return to work but released a robocall to voters Saturday asking for patience.

A Mayo spokeswoman says Jackson isn't a current patient and she couldn't confirm whether he plans to check into the clinic.

The congressman's spokesmen didn't immediately return messages.

The elder Jackson wouldn't say when the checkup was. He says his son wants to work, but it's up to his doctors.

Despite calls from challengers, the incumbent has not resigned from his Congressional post and is widely favored to win in the November election. And while he hasn't sent out a campaign mailer, video or public statement in months, records show he's spent about the same amount of money in his campaign as others in competitive re-election fights.
