Florida Baby Can't Crawl After Drinking Mom's Methadone

A southwest Florida mother has been arrested after authorities say her 1-year-old son drank some of her methadone and is now partially blind.

The Department of Children and Families says the child was placed in a drug-induced coma and had at least two seizures after taking the methadone. He was also diagnosed with anoxic brain injury brought by prolonged oxygen deprivation. The baby can no longer crawl or pull himself up because of his injuries.

The News-Press reports Anna Highland, 27, and her baby took a 3-hour nap last month after the baby was found on the floor with the methadone bottle. She called 911 when the child didn't wake up. Methadone is used to treat drug withdrawal.

Highland was charged Wednesday with medical aggravated child neglect.

The baby was discharged Sept. 28 and placed into medical foster care.
