Three former executives of Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) were indicted on charges of negligence Monday for their role in failing to prevent the Fukushima nuclear meltdowns following the tsunami of 2011, NHK reported.
Former TEPCO chairman Tsunehisa Katsumata and former vice presidents Sakae Muto and Ichiro Takekuro were indicted by court appointed lawyers. All are expected to plead not guilty.
A 2012 parliamentary probe found the meltdowns to be a "man-made disaster", but prosecutors previously failed to bring charges against individuals at TEPCO, citing insufficient evidence.
A judiciary panel made of up Japanese citizens reviewed the case in July and ruled that the executives should face trial, pressing prosecutors to reopen the case.
