A funeral is being held for a Maryland man who police say died while trying to help a woman being carjacked by a federal security officer now charged with three murders.

A funeral Mass for Malcom Winffel was set to begin at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Gaithersburg, the Catholic Church said in a statement.

Winffel's family said he loved sports and his size and strength earned him the nickname "The Tank" in a recreational soccer team. He was 45 years old and leaves behind a wife and two children in high school.

Winffel was fatally shot Friday in the parking lot of a Bethesda mall by a man identified as 62-year-old Eulalio Tordil, a Federal Protective Service officer accused of shooting and killing his estranged wife the day before.

Police said Tordil was apparently attempting to carjack a woman at the mall. The woman and another man were also wounded.

Tordil fatally shot another woman a short time later while apparently attempting a second carjacking, according to police. He stood silently during his first court appearance Monday, where a judge ordered Tordil held without bond. Those who knew Tordil said they were shocked by the allegations.
