German Court Says 94-Year-Old U.S. Man Unfit for Nazi Trial

Suffering from "worsening dementia"

A 94-year-old U.S. man accused of being an SS guard at Auschwitz is unfit to stand trial, The Associated Press reported. A German court said Hans Lipschis is suffering from "worsening dementia" and can't be tried. He was charged with 10,510 counts of accessory to murder and was deported from the U.S. in the early 1980s after lying about his Nazi past. He has acknowledged being assigned to an SS guard unit at Auschwitz but maintains he only served as a cook and was not involved in any war crimes. Stuttgart prosecutors said they hadn't yet decided whether to appeal the decision.
