Gun Owners Question Whether Executive Order is Necessary

Under President Barack Obama's executive order, anyone buying guns online must go through a background check. But some North Texas gun owners are questioning if it's necessary.

At Defender Outdoors in Fort Worth, gun buyers must fill out a background check and get approved to purchase a gun. Under the new order, people who buy guns online will be required to go through the same process.

But managers say legal online gun buyers already do that.

"This just makes it a little harder for the people who are buying between friends," said Andrew Sypien, with Defender Outdoors.

Gun enthusiasts said Obama's order misses the mark when it comes to preventing another tragedy like at Columbine, Virginia Tech or Sandy Hook.

"There's nothing in this executive order that will make it harder for criminals to get guns," Sypien said.

Instead, Sypien says, it creates more hoops for legal gun owners to jump through.

The president's order now requires background checks for sales at gun shows and online.

Bottom line, if you're making money from selling a gun you must run a background check.

"Criminals aren't getting background checks anyway," Sypien said. "They're not going to just because of this executive action."

Not complying with the new order could come with up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
