Happy Ending for Polo the Shih Tzu: Reunited With Owner After Two Years

A Shih Tzu found in a locked crate next to a dumpster in Washington, D.C., has been reunited with his owner, who says the dog was stolen from him two years ago in Miami.

The Washington Humane Society reported on its Facebook page that the dog had been "severely neglected" when it was found the day before Thanksgiving. The dog's hair was matted, and his toenails had grown into the pads of his feet. He had trouble walking.

The dog recovered, and the Humane Society realized he had been microchipped. Workers found his original owner, who said the dog's name is Polo.

The owner, identified by the Humane Society as Jason Brandon, had moved to New York.

Brandon told the shelter that Polo had been stolen from him two years ago. Brandon drove from New York to the Washington Humane society on Saturday to collect his long-lost dog.

"This is just unbelievable," Brandon said, according to the Humane Society's Facebook page. "It's something you see on CNN!"

The Humane Society reminded pet owners to microchip their pets. Microchipping is available on a walk-in basis for $35 at the Humane Society's Spay and Neuter Clinic.
