Hoverboard Explodes at South Carolina Home

A hoverboard exploded inside a South Carolina home, causing a small fire but no injuries, authorities said.

The Mauldin Fire Department told local news outlets one of the popular gadgets — also known as self-balancing electric scooters — exploded Tuesday afternoon.

Fire Lt. Christopher Walker said two teens at the home received hoverboards for Christmas.

One had just finished charging his board when the batteries combusted and flew about 20 feet across the living room, lighting a chair on fire and burning the carpet, authorities said.

Officials said no one was injured. The fire caused no structural damage to the home, according to Walker.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission said it has received dozens of reports of hoverboard-related injuries across the country and is actively investigating fires caused by the boards.
