Mexico Detains Drug Lord El Chapo's Top Money Launderer

Juan Manuel Alvarez was captured in Oaxaca City

Mexico’s federal police said the chief money launderer for notorious drug lord Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán has been detained in southern Mexico, according to NBC News.

In a statement Sunday, police said Juan Manuel Alvarez was captured in Oaxaca City "without firing a single shot."

Police described Manuel Alvarez as "the main operator of money laundering" in the Sinaloa cartel, which has been led for decades by Guzmán.

Guzmán, who was first arrested in the early 1990s, has twice absconded from Mexican prisons. He tunneled out of a maximum security prison last July and was recaptured in January.
