One Officer Dead, One Wounded in Utah Shootout

One police officer was killed and another was recovering after a shootout Sunday morning with a man who authorities said fled the scene of an accident in Utah, NBC News reported.

Douglas Barney of the Salt Lake County Unified Police Department died after a single bullet struck him in the head, Sheriff Jim Winder said. The second officer, Jon Richey, was shot three times, but was “conscious and alert,” Winder told NBC station KSL.

The suspect, Cory Lee Henderson, 31, was also killed. He was wanted on state and federal warrants, according to police spokesman Justin Hoyle, who spoke to NBC News.

An officer stumbled onto a non-fatal accident on Sunday and discovered two people left the scene on foot. Barney, who was dispatched with other officers, was later found to be shot. There was an exchange of gunfire minutes later between Henderson and police, Holye told NBC News.
