Man Shoots Woman, Kills Self at Kindred Hospital: Police

An 87-year-old man is dead and a woman is recovering after the man allegedly shot the woman in the lobby of a hospital in Coral Gables before turning the gun on himself, according to police.

The incident happened around 9:30 a.m. at Kindred Hospital South Florida, located at 5190 Southwest 8th Street in Coral Gables. According to its website, Kindred Hospital is a nationwide network of inpatient rehabilitation facilities that specialize in long-term acute care.

According to police, Thebaldo Tanes had a phone conversation with Margery Glickman, 69, and asked her to come to the hospital. Glickman arrived at the hospital, and at some point began to walk away from Tanes. Tanes then pulled out a gun and shot Glickman multiple times before taking his own life.

Glickman was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital and is expected to survive, according to police.

"This was a very sad an unfortunate situation," Kindred Hospital CEO Charles Doten said in a statement. "A family dispute occurred in our lobby away from patient rooms. Patient care was not impacted at any time. Upon learning of the altercation, we immediately contacted the police. We are fully cooperating with the authorities in the ongoing investigation."

Witnesses did not report hearing an argument between the two, and police said there is no evidence of an altercation.

Neither police nor hospital officials have specified whether Tanes was a patient or a visitor.

No further information was immediately available.
