Richard Branson Announces Virgin Cruises to Have Home Port in Miami

British business magnate Richard Branson is making Miami the main port for his new Virgin Cruises, and plans to have three ships sailing by 2020.

Branson made the announcement at a press conference at the Perez Art Museum Tuesday. Branson announced in December he would launch the cruise line, which joins a strong Virgin compound of a record label, an airline and even space travel, among others.

Virgin Cruises President and CEO Tom McAlpin joined Branson at the event.

Branson and McAlpin announced the signing of a letter of intent with Italian shipbuilding company Fincantieri for three new mid-size ships that will feature 1,430 cabins to host 2,800 guests.

Virgin Cruises plans to offer a range of seven-day Caribbean cruises sailing out on Sundays from PortMiami.

McAlpin joined Virgin Cruises in December and was President of Disney Cruise Line and The World, Residences at Sea.
