Seattle Teachers Approve Labor Contract, Vote to End Strike

Seattle teachers voted to approve a contract between the union and its school district on Sunday. The move ends a weeklong strike that delayed the start of the school year for 53,000 students.

Teachers walked out on Sept. 9 in Washington state’s larges school district.

Members of the Seattle Education Association ratified the three-year deal in downtown Seattle. The deal gives teachers a 9.5 percent pay raise per three years, guaranteed 30-minute recesses for elementary students and more input for teachers on standardized tests.

Teachers, who were working without a contract since the end of August, originally asked for a 21 percent raise over three years. They complained about the high cost of living in Seattle.
