Texas Native Among Israeli Soldiers Killed in Gaza

Sgt. Nissim Sean Carmeli, 21, was from South Padre Island, Texas, and moved to Israel four year ago, the Israeli Consulate in Houston says.

Two Americans who were soldiers for the Israel Defense Forces were killed in fighting in the Gaza Strip, one of which was a Texas native.

The Israeli Consulate in Houston says 21-year-old Israeli-American citizen Sgt. Nissim Sean Carmeli has been killed during fighting in the Gaza Strip.

Deputy Consul General to the Southwest Maya Kadosh says Carmeli was from South Padre Island, Texas, and moved to Israel four year ago. Kadosh says the consulate helped Carmeli's family get a flight to Israel.

Carmeli was among 13 Israeli soldiers, 2 of which were American, and 65 Palestinians killed Sunday during the first major ground battle in two weeks of fighting between Israel and Hamas.

Rabbi Asher Hect of Chabad of the Rio Grande Valley is a longtime family friend. He says Carmeli joined the Israeli army after high school.

Max Steinberg, a 24-year-old man who grew up in Los Angeles, also died Sunday.
