3 Teens Shot Outside Chicago School: Police

Three teens were shot outside a Chicago school Friday afternoon and police are still searching for the shooter, according to authorities.

The shooting happened just before 1 p.m. outside Excel Southwest Academy in the 7000 block of South Washtenaw, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

Chicago Police said a group of teens were walking on the sidewalk when someone walked out of a gangway across the street and opened fire at them. Three teens were injured in the shooting and ran into the school for help while the offender fled the scene, according to Chief of Patrols Wayne Gulliford.

They were transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center for treatment after the incident.

A 17-year-old boy was transported in critical condition. A 17-year-old girl was shot in the ankle and listed in good condition.

A 15-year-old boy suffered a graze wound to the body and his condition was not immediately known.

It was not clear if any of the victims were students at the school.

The school said in a statement it was "heartbroken over this senseless act of violence."

"This is a very emotional and painful time for the entire staff that works so closely and cares so much about kids in our community," a statement from Todd Bock, the CEO of Camelot Education, the alternative education group that runs the school, read. "We strive to keep our campuses safe, including safe corridors to and from school. But as this tragic incident shows, we can’t prevent someone with a gun and no conscience from this kind of attack on the street. It is a testament to our staff that they were out there and were able to administer immediate first aid."

Police said they were still searching for the shooter Friday afternoon.

Fire officials initially said three people were shot outside the school, but later said only two people were shot. Chicago police later reported three people had been shot.

Police said an investigation was ongoing.

The shooting is the second shooting outside a Chicago school this week.

On Thursday, a 14-year-old boy was critically injured in a shooting in the 2700 block of East 89th Street on the city's South Side, across the street from Bowen High School.
