St. Pete Chef Killed by Drunk Driver on Way Home to Pregnant Wife

Aaron Davis' wife, Ana, gave birth to a son on Tuesday, days after her husband was killed.

Police say a popular St. Petersburg chef has died after being hit by a drunken driver while walking home from work to see his pregnant wife, just days before she gave birth to their second child.

St. Petersburg police say they tried to make a DUI stop early Saturday on 25-year-old Jason Mitchell. Authorities said he ran several red lights before striking Aaron Davis and his co-worker Brian Lee LaFrance. Davis died at the scene and LaFrance had non life-threatening injuries.

Davis' wife, Ana, gave birth to a son on Tuesday, the Tampa Bay Times reported. Their daughter, Audrey, is 21 months old.

Authorities said Mitchell tried to escape from police headquarters while undergoing a breath test. The Tampa Bay Times reports he faces charges of DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide, aggravated fleeing and eluding, leaving the scene of a crash involving a death and DUI serious bodily injury.

Jail records show Mitchell has a history of arrests for grand theft auto, fleeing police and drug possession. It was not immediately clear if he has an attorney.
