In this photo released on the official Facebook page of the Syrian Presidency, Syrian President Bashar Assad, fourth right, prays at the dawn Eid al-Adha prayers at the Saad ibn Muaaz Mosque in Daraya, a blockaded Damascus suburb, Syria, Monday, Sept. 12, 2016.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said Monday the state was determined "to recover every area from the terrorists, and to rebuild," a comment that came during a tour of the Damascus suburb of Daraya, which was evacuated by rebels and returned to state control last month.

Assad prayed at a mosque in Daraya on the occasion of Eid al-Adha. The visit came hours before a U.S.-Russian cease-fire deal was due to take effect.

Daraya had been a major symbol of the uprising against Assad, and its surrender to government forces after years of siege marked a big blow to the rebellion.

Assad was pictured kneeling at prayer in a bare hall alongside other worshippers, including the state's grand mufti, in a photo published by state news agency SANA.
