Trans Corrections Employee Denied Access to Men's Room

The employee, a nurse, was told to use a unisex restroom instead of the men's bathroom

The American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa filed a complained with the Iowa Civil Right Commission Wednesday on behalf of a state corrections employee who wasn’t allowed to use the bathroom associated with his gender identity, NBC News reported.

Jesse Vroegh was told to use a unisex restroom after being denied access to the men’s bathroom and locker rooms at work. According to an ACLU statement, the unisex facility doesn’t have a shower and would isolate Vroegh from his co-workers.

Vroegh said he hopes his complaint sends a message.

A spokesperson for the corrections department told The Associated Press "the department strongly focuses to protect and treat with respect the public, staff and offenders," though he would not comment specifically on Vroegh's complaint.
