U.S. Border Patrol Helicopter Fired Upon, Forced to Land: Sheriff

A U.S. Border Patrol helicopter was fired on from Mexico and forced to make an emergency landing in Texas, officials said Friday.

The helicopter was patrolling the Rio Grande near the far northwest corner of Laredo around 5 p.m. local time Friday (6 p.m Eastern) when it was hit by two bullets, Webb County Sheriff Martin Cuellar told the Laredo Morning Times. A total of five shots were fired, Cuellar said.

The helicopter landed safely, and no one aboard was hurt, Border Patrol spokesperson Sara Melendez said.

Officials did not say whether the gunfire came from the Mexican side of the river or the U.S. side.
