California has a new Lieutenant Governor: Abel Maldonado.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced the appointment on Monday's episode of "The Jay Leno Show." Maldonado is currently serving in the State Senate for the 15th Senate District.

Maldonado will still need to be confirmed by the Senate.

Former Lt. Gov. John Garamendi left the position to represent the Bay Area's 10th Congressional District.

Schwarzenegger has a special spot in heart for Leno when it comes to big announcements. Back in 2003, he announced his candidacy for governor on "The Tonight Show."
