In the end, the California Republican Party did not endorse Arizona's controversial immigration law.
The GOP on Sunday adopted a committee's report without discussion, killing a resolution that had been proposed by a conservative faction of the party.
Members of the conservative California Republican Assembly, who drafted the resolution, had accused GOP gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman of softening her stance on key issues such as fighting illegal immigration. That created tension between conservative delegates and Whitman supporters trying to court Hispanic voters in the November general election.
The resolution would have affirmed the party's support for the Arizona law and Proposition 187, the 1994 initiative to cut public benefits to undocumented immigrants.
A committee had blocked discussion of the resolution a day earlier.
