Gov. Brown to Propose $1B for New School Standards

Gov. Jerry Brown will propose giving California school districts an additional $1 billion to implement new, more rigorous academic standards and $240 million more for his sweeping school funding overhaul.

Administration officials tell The Associated Press that Brown will maintain his proposed formula for the spending overhaul in the revised budget plan he releases Tuesday. It would send more money to districts with more English learner and low-income students, despite criticism from Democrats in the state Legislature.

California has seen a surge of $4.5 billion more than expected this year and much of the money by law must go to education.

The Democratic governor wants to give districts $1 billion to implement ``common core'' standards, including more English and mathematics instruction and higher-order thinking.
