Military officials say a Marine from Northern California has been killed in Afghanistan.
The Department of Defense says Lance Cpl. Gavin Brummund died Thursday while supporting combat operations in Afghanistan's Helmand province.
The 22-year-old Brummund was from Arnold, a small community in Calaveras County.
He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.
An Associated Press count has found that at least 1,026 members of the U.S. military have died in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Uzbekistan since the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001.
The AP count is 11 more than the Defense Department's tally, last updated Friday morning.
