Santa Clara Approves 49ers Stadium Contract

Deal is laced with incentives to finish construction by start of 2014 season.

Officials from Santa Clara made the dream of the 49ers playing in the South Bay that much more of a reality Tuesday night.

The Santa Clara City Council approved a $878 million construction contract with firm Turner-Devcon to erect the stadium by the start of the 2014 season Tuesday night.

The deal includes millions of dollars in fines if the stadium is not complete by the start of the 2014 stadium.

The contract will require that construction start by July 1 of this year and that it be completed by August 2014.

If the completion of the stadium is delayed, the construction firm would be fined $6 million per game the 49ers miss in the new stadium.
