Ted Kennedy Jr. is planning to run for the state Senate in Connecticut.

Two people briefed on the decision said the son of the late U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts will announce on Tuesday that he intends to seek the Democratic nomination for the 12th Senatorial District. They spoke on condition of anonymity because Kennedy wants to make the announcement.

Kennedy is 52-year-old health care lawyer who lives in Branford and has been mentioned as a possible political candidate for years. He said last month he was considering running for the seat and would announce his decision within two weeks.

The 12th District is represented by Guilford Democrat Edward Meyer, who is retiring. The seat represents Branford, Durham, Guilford, Killingworth, Madison and North Branford.

Kennedy has said he's been encouraged by friends and civic leaders to run for the seat.

He will make the announcement at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at James Blackstone Memorial Library Auditorium, which is located at 758 Main Street in Branford.

Kennedy's name has been floated over the years as a possible candidate for various political offices, including U.S. Senate seats in Connecticut and Massachusetts, but he has declined to run.
