Trump Calls for ‘New Unity' in Nevada Speech After Divisive Rally

President Donald Trump called for a "new unity" based on common American values while giving the keynote speech at an American Legion convention in Reno, Nevada, Wednesday.

The speech comes a day after a campaign rally in Phoenix in which Trump emphasized divisions, criticizing Arizona's two Republican senators and lashing out at the media.

But on Wednesday, he said that it's "time to heal the wounds that have divided us and to seek a new unity based on the common values that unite us."

To the members of the American Legion, he said, "We are here to hold you up as an example of strength, courage and resolve that our country will need to overcome the many challenges that we face."

Trump spoke hours after reiterating his criticism of Sen. Jeff Flake. He tweeted that he loves "the Great State of Arizona" but is "not a fan of Jeff Flake, weak on crime & border!"

At the rally Tuesday night, Trump insisted that his refusal to mention the names of Flake and Sen. John McCain showed a "very presidential" restraint.

Trump's rally on Tuesday also opened with calls for unity and an assertion that "our movement is about love," but quickly erupted in anger. He used it to push back against media coverage of his response to the violence at a Charlottesville, Virginia, protest organized by white supremacists.
