Wis. Congressman: Voter ID Law to Help GOP in November

Republican U.S. Rep. Glenn Grothman's comment to a TV station in Milwaukee that Wisconsin's newly enacted voter ID law will "make a little bit of a difference" in helping the GOP in November has sparked retorts on social media.

Republican Gov. Scott Walker signed the law in 2011, but court battles kept it from taking effect until this year.  Supporters say it prevents fraud, while critics say it disenfranchises young, poor and minority voters — those likely to vote for a Democratic.

A link to a video of Grothman's comment had been retweeted hundreds of times, with critics calling it a gaffe, NBC affiliate WTMJ reported

A WTMJ reporter asked Grothman whether a Republican can win the White House.

"Well, I think Hillary Clinton is about the weakest candidate that the Democrats have ever put up and now we have photo ID. I think photo ID is going to make a little bit of a difference as well," Grothman responded.

Some social media users said Grothman's comments supported claims the new law was meant to disenfranchise Democrats, WTMJ reported.

Grothman's office didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.
