The 49ers home opener will be hog heaven for one San Francisco biker.
Anybody who thinks that attending NFL games is only for rich, corporate type bluebloods has another thing coming when the 49ers are introduced at their home opener Sunday, September 20 against Seattle.
The SF Weekly is reporting that the 49ers will be led onto the field by a tattoo-covered, lifelong Niner fan biker guy riding a tricked-out, customized 49er Harley-Davidson when they emerge from the locker room for their home opener.
The tattoo-covered, lifelong Niner fan biker guy in question is Steve Mahoney. He's a 51-year-old San Francisco Department of Public Works street-steamer whose Candlestick dream will come true shortly before the 1:05 p.m. kickoff.
When the 49ers come out of the locker room, Mahoney will lead the way riding his custom red-and-gold Harley-Davidson emblazoned with a 49ers logo.
Mahoney is a lifer who has been attending 49er games since back in the Kezar Stadium days. Now, all his devotion through those lean Norm Snead and Steve DeBerg years is paying off in a very public way.
Mahoney's bike will be tested on the Candlestick turf Friday to see how well the grass surface handles his hog, but he isn't worried. "It shouldn't be a problem," Mahoney told the SF Weekly. "They've had bigger things and heavier things on that grass."
Hell, they've had a Beatles concert and a 7.1 Richter Scale earthquake on that grass. They didn't used to call it "Monster Park" because of it's dainty surface.
