The disturbing thing about this preposterous 5-9 San Francisco 49ers division title and playoffs talk is the unsurprising likelihood that the whole scenario could so easily place.
Granted, the 49ers do have to beat the Rams on the road at 10:00 a.m. PST Sunday. But it's the same Rams team they beat in Week 10, and a team that has lost four of their last six.
The Niners don't even need help to survive the weekend -- a Seahawks win does not eliminate them this week.
Troy Smith starts this week against the Rams. Troy is the Smith who engineered the comeback, rabbit-from-the-hat, overtime win over these Rams in Week 10.
Joe Kukura is a freelance writer who in all his sub-.500 playoff hysteria is forgetting all about the San Jose Sharks.
