49ers Draft Return Man a Week Early

Team sends a fifth round pick to Miami for Ted Ginn Jr.

49ers fans who had doubts acting General Manager Trent Baalke would make a bold move in the draft got their answer with less than a week until the team is on the clock.

The San Francisco 49ers filled two holes Friday with one fifth round draft pick. The team picked up the under producing but speedy Ted Ginn Jr. from the Miami Dolphins for a fifth-round pick in next week's draft.

Ginn immediately adds speed to a team that struggled to throw the ball deep and it gives the team a viable return man ahead of the draft, an area Head Coach Mike Singletary said he wanted to address with multiple options heading into the draft.

Miami trade for talented but troubled Denver Broncos wide out Brandon Marshall earlier this week made Ginn expendable.

The former first round selection struggled as a starting wide out during his two years in Miami but his speed helped him to a 24.9 yards per kickoff return average last season with two touchdowns and during his rookie season Ginn returned a punt for a touchdown as well.

The change of scenery could be a good move for Ginn, who would not need to be a starting wide out in San Francisco with the emergence of Michael Crabtree and Josh Morgan.

The move may also derail the CJ Spiller bandwagon and allow the team to focus on drafting a tackle and help in the secondary with its two first round picks next week.
