49ers Loving the London Fog

The Sunday weather forecast for the London borough of Brent, the site of this weekend's San Francisco 49ers contest at Wembley Stadium, calls for rain showers and low of eight degrees Celsius.

I don't even remember what "degrees Celsius" means, but suffice to say that this 49ers-Broncos matchup is likely to be played in the cold, rain, and fog.

The game's local start time in London is 6 p.m. in the United Kingdom Time Zone, so it's a night game even though you will be watching it at 10 a.m. in the Pacific Time Zone. Plenty of time before the Giants' World Series Game 4 first pitch at 5 p.m. PDT Sunday night.

How dreary is the weather? Writing from on location, the Sacramento Bee's Matt Barrows says, "I feel like I'm in Finland. Northern Finland."

But the 49ers have been practicing in outdoors in the London rain and muck all week, and they're beginning to like it.

"I think the time that we have spent over here has been well served," coach Mike Singletary told the Bee. "The situation that we're going to play in is going to be very similar to what we have out here (in practice). Rather than try and find a bubble or something like that, let the guys out and experience what the field is pretty much going to be like because the grass is cut just about the same level at Wembley as it is here."

That means not so many London air raids to Michael Crabtree, and a game plan featuring short slag heaps to Vernon Davis and great escapes from the backfield by Frank Gore.

Vernon Davis had been questionable for Sunday's game, but NBC Sports reports that Davis will play Sunday.
