49ers Move it to Monterey

Check you out, Monterey, Calif. For one day, you are the surprise hosts of San Francisco 49ers training camp.

With very little notice, coach Mike Singletary packed up the team and bussed them to Monterey for Thursday morning practice. The team is scheduled to practice Thursday morning and afternoon at the cool and foggy confines of the Cal State-Monterey Bay Otter Soccer Complex, the San Jose Mercury News reports.

This practice is not open to the public.

Coach Singletary says he pulled the one-day move just to shake things up and avoid training camp burnout.

"You don't want it to be where the energy is great and then the next day we're flat," coach told the Mercury News. "I don't want us to do that and our team doesn't want to do that either."

So how has the moved worked out?

The "hit of the day" thus far in the Niners' Monterey foray goes to backup fullback Jehuu Caulcrick in a 4-on-4 nutcracker drill.

And the "wisecrack of the day" award goes to the Sacramento Bee's Matt Barrows, who tweets, "The 49ers are practicing in misty, 50-degree weather to prepare for the opener in Seattle".

Joe Kukura is a freelance writer who loves that the 49ers chose to hold practice at a college that does not actually have a football field.
