49ers Shake-Up: Singletary Fired

Jim Tomsula takes over 49ers

The 49ers fired head coach Mike Singletary late Sunday night.  The moves comes just hours after the 49ers lost in St. Louis -- and were officially eliminated from the playoff race.

Assistant coach Jim Tomsula will be introduced on Monday afternoon as the 49ers interim head coach.

"I want to thank Mike Singletary for the passion and effort he brought to this organization," said 49ers owner Jed York in a prepared statement.

Singletary also released a statement reading in part, "One of the greatest experiences in my life was having the opportunity to coach the San Francisco 49ers."

Singletary's tenure as head coach lasted just two years, but was filled with controversial incidents including Sunday's heated verbal exchange on the sidelines with quarterback Troy Smith.
