Bay Area Professional Athletes to Star in PSAs Promoting Equality

Bay Area sports fans will soon see their local athletes in a new arena.

Comcast SportsNet Bay Area has partnered with You Can Play, a non-profit organization supporting athlete equality, to produce a series of public service announcements featuring prominent Bay Area professional athletes promoting acceptance and respect for all athletes regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation.

The PSAs, debuting Wednesday during the 5 p.m. segment of CSN’s “Yahoo! SportsTalk Live,” will feature San Francisco Giants’ Barry Zito, Oakland Athletics’ Coco Crisp, Golden State Warriors’ Klay Thompson, San Jose Sharks’ Joe Thornton, San Francisco 49ers’ Vernon Davis, Oakland Raiders’ Marcel Reece and the San Jose Earthquakes’ Chris Wondolowski.

“We support their overriding message that every athlete should be a good teammate and welcome others regardless of their sexual orientation,” stated Ted Griggs, president of CSN Bay Area.

Patrick Burke, president of You Can Play, said that he hopes the PSAs’ message will help LGBT athletes, coaches, and fans know that they are welcome in every Bay Area sports arena.

“We hope the wonderful LGBT community in the Bay Area knows that their local sports teams value their passion and will work to support them in return,” Burke said.
