ESPN, MLB Meddling in Giants Opening Day

Opening Day is one of the biggest dates in Bay Area sports history.

The Chronicle is reporting that a big change is being pitched for the San Francisco Giants Opening Day 2011.

It will be a massive day of celebration for the team and its fans who haven't gathered inside a ballpark since the World Series win in Texas.  The team will get their World Series rings and the pre-game ceremony is sure to have all the pomp and circumstance of a Superbowl.

According to the Chronicle, both ESPN and Major League Baseball are trying to move the first game of the season from Los Angeles to San Francisco on Thursday, March 31 at 5 p.m.  It would be the ESPN "showcase" game and would kick off the 2011 season.

If approved, the teams would play in San Francisco Thursday and then fly to LA Friday for the regularly scheduled four game series.

Opening Day was scheduled for Friday, April 8.

Although it sounds like a ticketing nightmare, season ticket holders haven't been issued their Opening Day tickets yet. Plus individual game sales for the first few home games haven't started either.
