Ed Lee Demands No More Candlestick Blackouts From PG&E

Pacific Gas and Electric Company is on Mayor Ed Lee's naughty list this holiday season.

The San Francisco mayor on Wednesday insisted that the utility company -- on the hot seat after a power line failed and a city-owned auxiliary switch malfunctioned and caused the lights at Candlestick Park to go black twice during a nationally-televised Monday Night Football game, a "national embarrassment," according to Lee -- vow that there won't be a repeat of the debacle, according to the San Francisco Examiner.

“I want something in writing from [PG&E CEO] Mr. [Anthony] Earley or PG&E folks that they’ve not only repaired the line, but that they’ve inspected it to the point that they can assure us it won’t happen again,” Lee said.

The utility on Thursday sent a letter to the team saying that it's conducting a "failure analysis" of the 12,000-volt line that ruptured outside the stadium before kickoff.

The 49ers won, 20-3, over the Pittsburgh Steelers in arguably the biggest win all year despite the distractions. But with a home playoff game on tap for as early as Jan. 7, and NFL officials not amused with the spectacle, there is pressure on team and city to not again appear as a laughingstock.
