Football Season Kicks Off, and Super Bowl 50 is 150 Days Away

There are 150 days until Super Bowl 50 takes center stage at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, but the party is already starting in the Bay Area.

Stars like Super Bowl champions Steve Young and Jim Plunkett are in the Bay Area to help cast the spotlight on the 50th year of the big game as the NFL gears up for its first regular season game Thursday night between the Patriots and the Steelers airing on NBC Bay Area at 5:40 p.m.

The NFL has set up an autograph area and stage at Justin Herman Plaza for the celebration where the likes of Steve Young, Jerry Rice, and Jim Plunkett have and will be involved with the kickoff events. Plunkett, a former quarterback for Stanford, the 49ers and the Raiders, a team he led to two Super Bowl championships, said Super Bowl 50 at Levi’s will spotlight the Bay Area.

“I think it’s pretty cool, I know they did back in 1985 the Super Bowl here at Stanford, but the game has gotten bigger,” said Plunkett. “I’m very proud of the fact that it’s going to take place here, we have a lot to be proud of. As I mentioned before, eleven out of the 49 Super Bowls were participated by these two franchises here in Oakland and San Francisco.”

Local legend Steve Young also said the stage is bigger in football, and the Bay Area has a great opportunity to capitalize on the spotlight with the Super Bowl at home.

“It really does reflect on the city, and you want it to go well, because everyone knows San Francisco, the Bay Area,” said Young. “They get that, a great tourist attraction, but the whole world is going to have a view of San Francisco post-Super Bowl. You want the Bay Area to shine during that time.”

For the NFL Kickoff 2015 event in San Francisco, Ellie Goulding and Train will be performing a free concert starting at 3:35pm. There will also be events and activities including pictures with the Lombardi trophies won by the two Bay Area teams, and autographs by former players.
