In a final attempt to bolster their offense down the home stretch, the San Francisco Giants acquired Jose Guillen from the Kansas City Royals for a player to be named later and cash considerations.
Guillen was designated for assignment last week, leaving the door open for a possible trade after the non-wavier trade deadline passed July 31.
The Giants ranked first in the National League
in runs scored in July. Once August hit however, their offense slipped. Guillen’s 16 HR’s and 66 RBI’s will be a welcome addition to a Giants team that is only 2.5 games back in the west.
Guillen is expected to be available for a big series starting tonight against the Padres
, the team they trail in the standings. The two teams will meet for this critical weekend series, which has the Padres leading the season series 7-1.
The trade comes with some criticism from sports writers and even fans due to Guillen’s lack of clubhouse presence. Guillen is widely know for his absence of team play and poor spirit.
A great deal off the Giants success this season comes from the chemistry they have formed. Bringing in Guillen comes with the risk of hurting this bond.
