He is 25 years and 331 days old.
Bumgarner struck out Rockies outfielder Brandon Barnes in the second inning.
He entered Sunday's game against Colorado needing one strikeout to achieve the milestone.
The previous youngest pitcher in the team's history to reach 1,000 strikeouts was Matt Cain.
