Whether it was intended for CEO Jed York or former coach Jim Tomsula is not known, but Jim Harbaugh on Sunday apparently weighed in on the latest upheaval within the 49ers organization.
Harbaugh posted the following message on his verified Twitter account just an hour after the 49ers announced the firing of Tomsula:
“Do not be deceived. You will reap what you sow.”
Shortly after the 49ers’ victory in last season’s finale, the organization announced a “mutual parting” with Harbaugh. The 49ers finished with an 8-8 record and out of the playoffs for the first time in Harbaugh's four seasons. Harbaugh had taken the 49ers to the NFC Championship game in the previous three seasons, including an appearance in the Super Bowl.
“I didn’t leave the 49ers,” Harbaugh said on Tim Kawakami’s podcast six weeks later. “I felt like the 49er hierarchy left me.”
Harbaugh and other members of the 49ers’ staff from 2014 may have believed Jim Tomsula, the team's defensive line coach the previous eight years, maneuvered behind the scenes to align himself as the next head coach above former 49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.
While Harbaugh experienced grand success at Michigan, leading his alma mater to a 10-3 record and a 41-7 victory over Florida in the Citrus Bowl, the 49ers became one of the worst teams in the NFL.
Tomsula was fired after a 5-11 season, and now the 49ers are looking for another head coach.
