Kenyan Sets Record in Boston Marathon

Wind-aided race won't count as a record

No one has ever run a marathon faster than Kenya's Geoffrey Mutai did in today's Boston Marathon.

Mutai clocked the 26.2 miles in 2 hours, 3 minutes and 2 seconds, to break the previous marathon record by nearly a minute. It was the fastest Boston Marathon time by nearly three minutes, though it won't count in the record books because Mutai benefited from a strong tailwind.

"From 15 kilometers, it was hard and it was hilly," Mutai said. "It is like a dream. So, I'm fulfilling my dream."

Among the women, fellow Kenyan Caroline Kilel won by two seconds, posting a 2:22:36 to beat American Desiree Davila.

The winners each get $150,000.
