At 7’ 2”, former Chicago Bull Luc Longely is no shrimp.
But the Australian center did just name one, according to The Scientist.
The shrimp, which is now called Lebbeus clarehanna after Longley’s 15-year-old daughter Clare Hanna Longley, was identified by University of Melbourne graduate student Anna McCallum. Rather than name the spotted, pinkish critter herself, she decided to auction off the right and donate the proceeds to the Australian Marine Conservation Society.
“It was a total surprise that a basketballer would be interested in this little deep-sea shrimp,” McCallum told The Scientist.
Longley, a native Australian who bought the rights as a birthday present for Clare, is no stranger to marine biology. The three-time NBA champ also helped halt construction of a resort near the Ningaloo Reef, a coral ecosystem near his home.
