Clay Matthews Hoax: Packers Linebacker Did Not Break Legs in Car Accident

Last season, Matthews registered 13 sacks in just 12 games.

Cheese heads rejoice. Packers linebacker Clay Matthews did not break both legs in an alleged car accident.

Several false reports have flooded the internet over the past few days, some even including what appear to be made up sources.

"A spokesperson for the Wisconsin highway safety authority (HSA) has confirmed that Clay Matthews has broken both of his legs in a traffic altercation, one of the phony websites reads. "He has been transported via ambulance to a local Wisconsin hospital for treatment, and the full extent of his injuries are not known at this time, however, both of his legs were visibly broken and not life threatening according to sources."

Over the past year, other hoax stories have circulated the web, including ones that stated other stars were seriously injured, among them Julio Jones, Tony Romo and Peyton Manning. NBC Sports' Mike Florio sees the gag as a dangerous game of chicken that continues to desensitize fans.

"The sad part is that, if/when a big-name NFL players actually does break both legs in a car accident, no one will believe it," Florio wrote on Sunday.

The injury to Matthews would have been catastrophic for the Packers defense. Last season, Matthews registered 13 sacks in just 12 games. In just four years in the NFL, Matthews has made the Pro Bowl every season.
