State's Newest Pro Team: Mountain Lions

Team moved to Sacto from Bay Area

Sacramento's new United Football League team will kick off the 2010 fall season with a new name –- the Mountain Lions.

The UFL said the moniker was one of the most popular options suggested by sports fans.

While several other names were earlier considered during a contest, coach Denny Green said the Mountain Lions emerged as a "dark horse" candidate.  Green was head football coach at Stanford and coached running backs for the 49ers.

"It's really going to be fun for the fans," Green said of the upcoming season.

The team, which moved to the capital from the Bay Area, was formerly known as the California Redwoods.

The Mountain Lions will play at Hornet Stadium at Sacramento State.

Green said open tryouts for the team will also be held beginning at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 15 at Natomas High School.

Green in the past served as head coach for the Arizona Cardinals and Minnesota Vikings.
