Great Britain Beats USA in Women's Team Pursuit

Canada won the race for bronze over New Zealand.

Great Britain beat the United States for a gold medal in the women's team pursuit track cycling event, a rematch of the 2012 Olympic gold medal race.

The British team of Katie Archibald, Laura Trott, Elinor Barker, and Joanna Rowsell-Shand set a world record of four minutes, 10.236 seconds over the 4,000-meter race.

Trott set a record as the first woman to win three gold medals for Britain. She won this event in 2012 along with the omnium, which she is scheduled to race again in Rio.

Canada won the race for bronze over New Zealand.

The American team of Sarah Hammer, Kelly Catlin, Chloe Dygart and Jennifer Valente set a world record in qualifying that was almost immediately topped by the British team.

The same dynamic was at play in the final, where the US put up a time of 4:12.454 that would have been a world record moments earlier, but was still second-best and earned a silver medal.

Earlier, Elis Ligtlee of the Netherlands won the women's keirin race over Britain's Becky James and Australia's Anna Meares, who had five previous Olympic medals in track cycling.
