One of England's popular soccer organizations has selected a co-ed East Bay youth club to brand and nurture in its identity.
Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, which plays in the English Premier League, has renamed the El Cerrito Futbol Club to Tottenham Hotspur East Bay.
It's one of two clubs in the country selected to be a partner; the other is in Tallahassee, Florida. The East Bay club has a recreational development academy as well as competitive teams.
Tottenham Hotspur officials in England hope that the program will help them find future stars of the EPL.
“We are delighted with our partnership with El Cerrito," Tottenham Hotspur's global ambassador Brad Friedel, a former USMNT goalkeeper, told NBC Bay Area.
"Our global coaching team works across the world to develop young players and educate coaches, getting across a unique philosophy the Club has always prided itself on – attacking football played with style and flair. This program is a real investment into the grassroots of US soccer and a fantastic opportunity for both organizations."
